Mr. Kritzer is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church and is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He is well known throughout Cambria County. Saint Bernard's Roman Catholic Church, Hastings, Pa., was built under the direction of Rev. Edwin Pierron, O. S. B., and dedicated Jan. 18, 1891. He was succeeded successively by Rev. Innocent Andelfinger, O. S. B.; Rev. Germain Ball O. S. B.; Marcellus Retger, O. S. B.; Gabriel Schaller, O. S. B., and Stephen Wieland, O. S. B. The Parochial School and St. Bernard's Convent were built under the supervision of Rev. Marcellus Retger, O. S. B., in the year 1914. The cornerstone of the new Saint Bernard's Church was laid by the Rt. Rev. John J. McCort, D. D., bishop of the Altoona Diocese, on the 6th of May, 1923, and it was dedicated the following year on March 2, 1924, during the pastorate of the Rev. Stephen Weiland, O. S. B. There are about 415 families in the parish and about 400 children attending the parochial school, in which seven Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary are teaching. F. J. Gallaschum is well known in Barnesboro, where he has engaged in business for a number of years. He was born in Germany, June 23, 1880, and is a son of Frederick and Mary (Gatkot) Gallaschum. Frederick Gallaschum lives in Germany and is extensively engaged in agriculture. His wife died in 1896. They had four children: F. J., the subject of this sketch; Minnie, married W. T. Robinson, lives at Jersey Shore, Pa.; Gustave, lives at Summit, Pa.; and Helen, married Herman Ramor, lives at Jersey Shore. At the age of 19 years F. J. Gallaschum emigrated to this country from Germany and settled at Austin, in Potter County, Pa. In 1905 he removed to Barnesboro, where he was associated in business with H. G. Lampmen for three years. He was later in partnership with Joseph Shoemaker and D. J. Bouger until 1916, when he engaged in business for himself. Mr. Gallaschum deals in high grade meats and provisions and is one of the pioneer merchants of the city. On Sept. 10, 1908, Mr. Gallaschum was married to Miss Nellie B. Trunbull, of Barnesboro, a daughter of James and Margaret Trumbull. |
