Missionary Society, as well as assistant organist in the church. She is a member of the Twentieth Century Club of Portage. Mr. Clark is affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose and is a Republican.




    Joseph H. Walters is a substantial and highly respected citizen of Lilly, where he is identified with the C. A. Hughes mining interests. He was born in Blair County, Pa., May 4, 1880, and is a son of John and Jennie (Carns) Walters.
    John Walters, deceased was a native of Bedford County, Pa. where he spent practically his entire life. His father was a large land owner in Blair and Bedford counties, where his forefathers had settled in the early days. John Walters died on the old homestead in Bedford County in 1905 at the age of 68 years. He was a farmer during his active career and for a number of years lived at Lilly. He was a Democrat and a member of the Lutheran Church. Jennie (Carns) Walters was born at Hollidaysburg, Pa., in 1863, and resides at Jeanette, Pa. To Mr. and Mrs. Walters were born four children: Emma Jane, died in infancy; Joseph H., the subject of this sketch; Valentine, married Miss Elva Pease, lives at Lilly; and Andrew, died in 1896, at the age of 13 years.
    Joseph H. Walters was 11 years of age when he began work in the old Mitchell mine, now known as Webster Mine No. 2. He has remained in the employ of C. A. Hughes continually since that time and is connected with Mine No. 2 at Lilly.
    On June 22, 1898, Mr. Walters was married to Miss Catherine Musselman, who was born in Blair County, Pa., June 22, 1876, the daughter of Simon C. and Mary (Fry) Mussleman, both deceased. Mr. Mussleman served throughout the Civil War with the Pennsylvania Volunteers. He died in September 1910, and his widow died the following year. To Mr. and Mrs. Walters were born ten children, as follows: Elva, married Harry w. Piper, lives at Altoona, Pa., Durvin, lives at Washington, Pa., attends Washington & Jefferson College, where he is studying for the ministry, married Miss Bessie Tubbs, of Cresson; Williamette, lives at home; Sherwood, Simon Reid, and Merle, all at home; Delmar, died in 1914, at the age of four years; Orville, Allegra, and Olga, at home.
    Mr.Walters is a Republican, a member of the Lutheran Church and is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias. He served as a member of the council for eight years and is prominent in civic affairs.
