1208 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    Harold F. Buck, a representative and successful young business man of Portage, is a veteran of the World War. He was born at Carrolltown in Cambria County, March 18, 1896, and is the son of C. F. and Anna (Callahan) Buck.
    C. F. Buck, deceased, was a native of Cambria county. He engaged in the undertaking business at St. Benedict for more than 30 years and was a reliable business man of that section. He died in 1910 at the age of 61 years and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery at St. Benedict. His wife was born in Cambria County in 1874 and resides in Chester Springs, Pa.
    Harold F. Buck received his early education in the schools of Carrolltown and was graduated from the University of Michigan in 1916. The following year he became associated in business with his father until he enlisted for the service in the World War. Mr. Buck served in France for 16 months and was discharged in 1919. He established his present undertaking business at Portage in 1920. His ability and progressiveness have resulted in his building up a most successful business.
    Mr. Buck is a Democrat, a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Loyal Order of Moose, and American Legion. He is identified with the Cambria County, Pennsylvania State and American Funeral Directors Associations.




    Russel S. Goldstein is one of the poplar young business men of Portage, where he is manager of the furniture business established by his father in 1889. He is a veteran of the World War. Mr. Goldstein was born in Portage, Aug. 9, 1896, and is a son of Abraham B. and Rebecca (Berger) Goldstein.
    Both Abraham B. Goldstein and his wife were natives of Russia. He was born Sept. 10, 1859, and when 25 years of age emigrated to the United States and settled in Altoona, Pa. He spent seven years as a peddler in Somerset and Cambria counties, and in 1889 settled at Portage, where he was associated in business with H. S. Goldstein. This partnership continued for 20 years. The present store building, which is of two story brick construction, was erected in 1924, the original store being destroyed by fire. Mr. Goldstein has become one of the leading merchants of Portage and is well known in the state. There are five children in the Goldstein family: Samuel, a World War veteran, is engaged in the furniture
