William J. Yeckley was reared and educated in Portage. At the age of 20 he became connected with the First National Bank, and two years later was made cashier. Thomas P. Leap is a well and favorably known in Lilly, where he has served as tax collector for 33 years. He was born here Oct. 6, 1876, and is the son of Christopher and Mary (Golden) Leap. Christian Leap, deceased, was born in eastern Pennsylvania, and when a boy came to Cambria County with his parents and settled in Lilly, where he followed mining. At the time of his death in 1882 he was employed as mine superintendent. His wife was born in Ireland in 1838 and died in 1898. They were members of the Catholic Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Leap the following children were born: Anna, married Christopher George, both deceased; John A., a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history; Martin, deceased; James, lives at Ebensburg; Mary, married George Litzinger, lives at Turtle Creek, Pa.; Thomas P., the subject of this sketch; Agnes, the widow of Michael Bradley, lives at Lilly; and Christopher, deceased. When a boy of 14 years Thomas P. Leap began work in the old Metzer mine at Lilly, where he was employed during his entire active career in the mines, being foreman since he was 19 years of age. He also conducts a general mercantile business at Lilly and ranks among the successful merchants of this section. On Sept. 4, 1889, Mr. Leap was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Hoover, of Lilly, the daughter of David and Mary (Sweeney) Hoover. Mr. Hoover, a native of Bedford County, Pa., was a Civil War veteran. He died Jan. 22, 1916, and his widow, a native of Lilly, still resides at that place.
