employ of the Pennsylvania Company and then turned his attention to the business of life insurance for some time. He then became interested in the real estate business.
    Mr. Lauffer was married Jan. 1, 1902, to Miss Augusta Hess, who was born in Germany, April 7, 1878, the daughter of August and Dora (Bruning) Hess. August Hess served in the Franco-German war, after which he was high sheriff. He died in his native land in 1880. His widow came to America soon after his death and located at Portage, where she married Lewis Walters, about 1882. She had four children by her former marriage: William, Harry, Augusta, and August. By the second marriage Three children, Emma, Fred, and Edna. To Joseph C. and Augusta (Hess) Lauffer the following children were born: Ethel, born June 9, 1903, graduate of Portage High School and Johnstown Business College, married in October, 1925 to Theodore Plumer, of Conemaugh, Pa. They live in Johnstown, where he is employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad; and she is employed by the Pittsburgh Packing Company; Harry, born April 1, 1904, married Pearl Burket of Portage, and they have a son, Raymond,; and Laura Althea Grace, married William Daugherty, of Conemaugh, and they have two children, Betty Lou and William.
    Mr. Lauffer is a Republican and has held various public offices. He was elected auditor of the borough in 1897-98-99; was appointed collector of the borough and took the census in 1900; and was elected justice of the peace in 1904, an office which he filled very acceptably. In 1906 he was elected burgess of Portage and reelected to this office in 1926. He is a member of the Lutheran Church.




    William T. Yeckley, the capable and well known cashier of the First National Bank at Portage, is a native of Cambria County. He was born at Gallitzin, Pa., Feb, 23, 1885, and is a son of George and Margaret (Glancy) Yeckley.
    George Yeckley and his wife were natives of Gallitzin, Pa. They came to Portage in 1893, where Mr. Yeckley opened a hotel, which he successfully conducted for 20 years. He died in 1913 and his widow died in 1916. The remains of both are buried in Portage. Mr. and Mrs. Yeckley were the parents of seven children, one of whom, John, died in 1916, at the age of 26, and is buried in Portage.
