HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY 1197

    To Mr. and Mrs. Metzger two children were born: William R., born Dec. 28, 1900, is a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, where he studied electrical engineering, lives in Pittsburgh. He married Miss Florence Riley. (2) Analda H., born in 1907, died 1909.
    Mr. Metzger is a member of the Christian Church, Kiwnis Club and Chetromon Country Club. He s a Democrat, and has a wide acquaintances in Cambria County.




    Charles W. Cullen is a substantial citizen of Portage, and a member of one of the prominent pioneer families of Cambria County. He was born at Portage, April 10, 1870, and is a son of Charles and Lucinda (Hughes) Cullen.
    Charles Cullen, who lives retired at Freeport, Pa., is a veteran of the Civil war. He was born at Wilmore, Cambria County, April 19, 1843, the son of John Cullen, a native of Ireland, who emigrated to this country in 1830 and settled in Wilmore. He was a tailor by trade and was thus employed at Wilmore for a number of years. He met an accidental death when struck by a train at Wilmore. His son, Charles Cullen, was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad until his retirement in 1900. During the Civil war her served with Company I, Fifty-fourth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and served a term of 11 months in Andersonville prison. Mr. Cullen is a member of the Catholic Church and the Grand Army of the Republic. His wife was born in Ebensburg, the daughter of John Hughes. She died in 1890. To Mr. and Mrs. Cullen the following children were born: Thomas P., lives at Portage; Charles W., the subject of this sketch; Edward J., lives at Portage; Alice, died at the age of 15 years; Maggie, married I.N. Clouser, lives at Freeport, Pa.; Millie Hass, lives at Portage; and Arthur, lives at Portage.
    Charles W. Cullen has always lived at Portage. He attended the public schools and when 12 years of age began work in the mines with his older brother. Four years later he learned telegraphy and in 1888 entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad, with whom has since been identified. Since 1900 Mr. Cullen has been stationed in the NY tower at Portage.
    On June 15, 1902, Mr. Cullen was united in marriage with Miss Theresa Riblett, who was born on the Riblett farm near Portage, the
