Mr. Hammers lives retired at 914 Gillespie Avenue, Portage. G. E. Metzger, president and treasurer of the Central Trading Corporation, St. Benedict, is recognized as one of the leading and successful business men of Cambria County. He was born in Center Country, Pa., March 6, 1874, and is a son of J. Leonard and Emily F. (Bitner) Metzger. J. Leonard Metzger, retired, was born in Clinton County, Pa., Nov. 3, 1843. His wife was born in that county, March 13, 1853, and died Aug. 28, 1914. During his active career Mr. Metzger was successfully engaged in farming and stock raising. He is a Democrat and member of the Catholic Church. Mr. and Mrs. Metzger had two sons: G.E., the subject of this sketch; and John W., lives at St. Benedict, where he is connected with the Rembrandt-Peale mining interests. G. E. Metzger spent his boyhood at Blanchard, Pa., and attended the schools there. He later learned telegraphy and entered the employ of the New York Central Railroad at Mitchells, Pa. In 1889 he removed to Windber, in Clearfield county, where he served as mine clerk for the Rembrandt-Peale mining interests. The following year he was transferred by the company to Clearfield, and in June 1904, was sent to St. Benedict as chief clerk for the same concern. He was later made superintendent of purchasing supplies and promoted to his present position as president of purchasing supplies and promoted to his present position as president and treasurer of the Central Trading Corporation. Mr. Metzger is also president and treasurer of the Northern Cambria Meat and Provision Company and is identified with the Purchasing Agents Association of America. On April 13, 1898, Mr. Metzger was married to Miss Anna Martha Gunsallus, a daughter of David and Lydia (Robb) Gunsallus, natives of Center County. Mr. Gunsallus died Jan. 28, 1920, and his wife died Dec. 4, 1918. To Mr. and Mrs. Gunsallus seven children were born, as follows: Harmon W., lives at Grass Flat, Pa.; Virginia Sarah, married David Whomand, lives at Beech Creek, Pa.; Emma Alice, married Harvey Heaton, lives at Yarnell, Pa.; Mary S., deceased, was the wife of J. Levi Mapes, and he lives at Avis, Pa.; Mrs. Metzger; Tibbins E., lives at Jersey Shore, Pa.; and Walter S., Lives in Center County. |
