George O. Morgan is successfully engaged in business at Portage where he is associated with the firm of Richardson & Morgan, electrical dealers. He was born at Portage, Nov. 29, 1889, and is the son of John F. and Sarah E. (Gordon) Morgan, natives of Bedford County, Pa.
George O. Morgan grew up in Portage and received his education in the public schools. He learned the printer’s trade with F. W. Eicher, of Portage, and five years later was associated in the printing business with Mr. Eicher, when the first issue of the Portage Press was published. Mr. Morgan later entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as a lever man in October, 1906, and has since been connected with the railroad in the capacity of telegraph operator and train dispatcher at South Fork. In 1922 Mr. Morgan became associated in business with G. C. Richardson, and they are well known dealers in electrical goods, their store being located at 704 Orchard Street.
Mr. Morgan was married Sept. 22, 1908, to Miss Minnie A. Hammers, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Hess) Hammers. They have three children: Beryl, born Feb. 5, 1914; Fay born Aug 4, 1915; and Dean, born March 6, 1918.
Politically Mr. Morgan is a Republican. He holds membership in the United Brethren Church and Masonic Lodge.
Frank Hammers, of Portage, was born in Cambria County, Nov. 30, 1861, the son of M.F. and Eliza (Maken) Hammers. The former was born in Bedford County, Pa., and was prosperous farmer of that section during his life. His wife was also born in Bedford County and they were pioneer settlers of Cambria county, where Mr. Hammers improved a large tract of land near Portage. Mrs. Hammers died in 1905. They had the following children: Liviana, born March 7, 1857, died May 16, 1890; Elizabeth A., born Dec. 5, 1858, married James C. Shaw, lives at Portage; Matilda L., was united in marriage Oct. 7, 1886 with William E. Woodward, and died in 1923; Sarah Irene, born June 30, 1871, married George W. Jones, died April 27, 1919; Micahel Francis, born Nov. 30, 1861; George Washington, born June 23, 1863, died Sept. 4, 1867.
On Sept. 22, 1885, Mr. Frank Hammers was united in marriage with Miss Emma Hess, of Richmond, Va., and to this union the following children were born: John Emerson, lives at Altoona, married Iva Dunlap, and they have three children, Melvin, Helen, and Emerson; Minnie, married George O. Morgan, subject of this sketch; William S., an attorney
