William P. Patterson, engineer for the Heisley Coal Company at Nanty Glo, is a veteran of the World War and an enterprising young business man of Cambria County. He was born at Houtzdale, Clearfield County, Pa., June 19, 1891, and is the son of James and Bridget (Ward) Patterson.
James Patterson was born in Scotland. At an early age he emigrated to this country and settled in Philipsburg, Pa., where he worked in the mines. He now resides at Idamar, Pa., where he is a mine foreman. He is a Republican and a member of the Catholic Church. His wife, also a native of Scotland, died in 1920 and is buried in Indiana, Pa. To Mrs. And Mrs. Patterson the following children were born: Jennie, married Tony Felack, lives at Idamar, Pa.; John, lives at Nanty Glo; Edward, lives at Nanty Glo; James, lives at Idamar, Pa.; William P., the subject of this sketch; Susanna, married Earl Oaks, lives at Clymer, Pa.; Margaret, married Carl Bents, lives at Dixonville, Pa.; and Elizabeth, lives at Greensburg, Pa.
After completing his schooling at Houtzdale, William P. Patterson entered the employ of the Dixon Coal Company at Dixonville, Pa., in the civil engineering department. He took a correspondence course and was later connected with the engineering department of the Ebensburg Coal Company as chairman of that department. In 1915 he went to Windber, where he was connected with the Berwin-White Coal Company in the same capacity. He came to Nanty Glo the following year and was associated with the Nanty Glo Coal Company as transit man. On Dec. 8, 1917, Mr. Patterson volunteered for service in the World war and was a member of the Twenty-eighth Engineers. He trained at Camp Meade, Md., and sailed for France, Feb. 6, 1918. He participated in the Meuse-Argonne drive, battle of Saint Mihiel and Bauche sector, and was discharged at Camp Dix, N.J., July 12, 1919, as a first-class sergeant. Upon his return to Nanty Glo he again entered the employ of the Nanty Glo Coal Company, which is now known as the Heisley Coal Company. Mr. Patterson is also connected with the Monroe Coal Mining Company at Revloc. He holds a certificate of land surveying and professional engineering in the State of Pennsylvania.
On Dec. 29, 1919, Mr. Patterson was united in marriage with Miss Catherine McDermott, the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Doyle) McDermott, a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Patterson: William Patrick, Jr.,
