then was appointed foreman of the company's machine shop and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1922.
    In January, 1887, Mr. Roberts was married to Miss Elizabeth Williams, the daughter of William J. and Hanna (Greene) Williams, the former a native of Wales and latter of England. Mr. and Mrs. Williams came to the United States in 1866 and settled in Scranton, Pa., where he worked in the mines until his death in 1900. His wife died in 1911. Mr. and Mrs. Williams had five daughters: Alice, married James Orr, retired, lives in Chicago, Ill.; Mary, Deceased; Ann, married Thomas P. Maskel, lives at Scranton, Pa.; Adelaide, married Edward Corbin, retired, lives at Rome, N.Y.; and Elizabeth Roberts. To John and Elizabeth (Williams) Roberts six children were born: (1) Mary born Dec. 3, 1888, married Charles C. Buck, lives at Johnstown, and they have two children, Ruth and Joseph; (2) William J., born Oct. 2, 1880, a merchant, lives at Vintondale; (3) James, mention of whom is made below; (4) Roy, born April 3, 1902, married Cora Bracken, lives at Vintondale; (5) Ruth, born Oct. 8, 1898, postmaster, Vintondale; and (6) John, born July 7, 1895, died 1898, buried at Scranton, Pa.
    James Roberts, who lives at Vintondale, where he is identified with the Vinton Supply Company, is a veteran of the World War. As born Aug. 5, 1893. On June 10, 1917, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to Battery A, Tenth Field Artillery. He arrived in France March 10, 1918, and took part in the following important engagements of the war; Champagne-Marne, July 15-18, 1918; Aisne-Marne, July 18-31, 1918; training period, Gondrecourt area, Au. 15-18, 1918; Saint Mihiel offensive, Sept. 12-16, 1918; Meuse-Argonne, Sept 26 to Nov. 11, 1918; Chateau-Thierry, July 10-14, 1918; and served in Germany with the Army of Occupation. He was recommended for the Distinguished Service Cross for gallant conduct as ammunition guide for north of Verdun from Oct. 1 to Nov. 4, 1918. During this time comrade was killed in action. Mr. Roberts married Miss Margaret Murnen.
    John Roberts is a Republican and is treasurer of the Vintondale School Board, of which he served as a member for 16 years. He is a deacon in the Baptist Church and belongs to the Knight of Malta, Summit Lodge, F. and A.M., No. 312, Ebensburg, and Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Ebensburg. He is well known and highly respected throughout the community where he has spent so many years.
