Pa., Oct. 18, 1852, the daughter of Samuel and Susanna (Saloniker) Cox. Mr. Cox was a prominent citizen of Bedford County at the age of 50 years volunteered for service in the Civil war. There were 12 children in the Cox family, as follows: Sarah M., mother of the subject of this sketch; Anne Josephine Brown, lives at Pleasantville, Pa.; George S. and Josephy C., both deceased; Lydia Margaret Edwards, lives at Pleasantville, Pa.; Samuel Martin, lives at Johnstown; Nancy Seece, lives at Romel, Pa.; Mary Elizabeth Seece, lives at Dale, Pa., Susan Catherine, Esther Emily Walter, William Henry and Jacob Moses, all deceased. To Frank and Sarah (Cox) Daugherty, who were married Dec. 11, 1877, the following children were born: Samuel M., the subject of this sketch: John, born July 14, 1882, died Feb. 9, 1920, buried in Grand View Cemetery, Johnstown; Issac L., mention of whom is made below; Susanna, born Sept. 11, 1888, died July 9, 1918, was the wife of Harry Pierson, who lives at Johnstown; Franklin H., born April 27, 1891, a World war veteran, lives at Little Washington, Pa.; and Amos Edgar, born Nov. 8, 1894, a World war veteran, lives at Johnstown.
Samuel M. Daugherty received his education in the public schools of Bedford County and in early life engaged in the lumber business with his father. In 1897 he removed to Portage, Pa., where he conducted a meat business, later he went to Lovett, Pa., where he was associated with the lumber firm of Howard & Perley. He later lived at Boswell and in 1903 settled in Johnstown, where he was employed by the Johnstown Traction Company. Mr. Daugherty later became interested in the real estate business with Joseph Canifel, after which he organized the Central Real Estate Company, in partnership with Cyrus Brown. In 1924 Mr. Daugherty established the Atlas Real Estate Company, with offices in the Farmers Trust Building. He has already met with marked success in this business undertaking.
In 1904 Mr. Daugherty was untied in marriage with Miss Della Kring, the daughter of Moses and Susan (Dunmyer) Kring, both deceased. Mr. Kring was a well known farmer of Cambria County for many years owned and operated five large farms. Della (Kring) Daugherty died Feb. 11, 1906, and is buried in Grand View Cemetery, Johnstown. She was survived by a daughter, Clair, who died Sept. 2, 1923. She was a graduate of Johnstown High School.
