Peter Baker Sr. of Baker street, Brownstown, Lower Yoder Township, was killed about noon today in Thomas H. Caddys coal mine, near, Lambert & Krees old brewery, in the Tenth Ward.
Mr. Baker was employed as a miner for Mr. Caddy and was working alongside of Joseph Strick, of the Tenth Ward. Shortly before 12 oclock he left his work and walked back a few feet from the coal to take a smoke. While kneeling down resting himself and arranging the tobacco in his pipe, a piece of slate five inches thick and three feet long fell from the roof and struck Mr. Baker over the right eye and on the arm.
Mr. Strick heard the fall of slate and went at once to make an investigation. He found the injured man lying unconscious and summoned help from another part of the mine. A physician was sent for, but while the messenger was absent from the mine Mr. Baker died.
The Cambria ambulance was also sent for and arrived at the mine just eight minutes later, but Mr. Baker had died in the meantime, The remains were turned over to Undertaker John Pendry who had them conveyed to his establishment and prepared for burial. They will be taken to the Baker homestead this evening.
Peter Baker, Sr., was a native of Germany and was about fifty-eight years of age. He has been in Johnstown for many years, during which time he was married twice. Mr. Bakers second wife was Mrs. Eva Wissel, a sister-in-law of Butcher Valentine Wissel. She had three daughters Bertha, Maggie and Kate to her first husband and two children to Mr. Baker. The latter are Louis, aged nine years and Ida aged six. Misses Bertha and Maggie Wissel are in Pittsburg and their sister is here.
The deceased was a devoted member of St. Marys German Catholic Church, The Knights of St. George, St. Josephs Beneficial Society and St. Georges Beneficial Society.
Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed, but services will likely be held in St. Marys German Catholic Church, corner of Broad St. and Third Avenue at 9 oclock Monday morning. Interment will be made in Lower Yoder Cemetery.
