Mexican War Veteran Dies
Was Comrade of Venerable J. D. Parrish of this Place and
Was at One Time Engineer on Old Portage Railroad
Justice J. D. Parrish, the venerable Mexican War veteran of this place, has received word of the death of William Bruce, who left Ebensburg with the famous Cambria Guards when they left Ebensburg, Jan. 2, 1842, on their way to the Mexican War. Prior to his departure to the Mexican War, Mr. Bruce was employed as an engineer on the Old Portage railroad. After his return from Mexico he again employed as an engineer, this time with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He left Ebensburg in 1869 for Tonganoxie, Leavenworth county, Kan., where he died a short time ago. He was 82 years of age at the time of his death and received an annuity from Andrew Carnegie for whom he worked when employed as an engineer on the PRR. The deceased is survived by a wife and six children, all located in Kansas, besides a number of relatives located in this vicinity. |
