| BULLET IN TEMPLE Portage Man Killed Himself in Early Morning Body Fell on Brother's Bed Victim of His Own Foolish Hand Was William H. Beck, aged Twenty-Three, and He Is Said to Have Committed the Deed Because He Was Despondent Over Irregular Work, Due to Scarcity of Coal Cars Portage, Nov. 8--William H. Beck, aged twenty-three years and unmarried, committed suicide about 1 o'clock Saturday morning at his home here by shooting himself in the temple. Mr. Beck was a miner. Scarcity of coal cars has caused the mines to run indifferently, and on this account he was unable to work steadily. It is said that he became disheartened on this account and the fact that he had to support his widowed mother, and took his life for that reason. He returned home Friday night about 11 o'clock, after having been drinking during the day, and talked with the rest of the family for a short time. He said he would sleep on the sofa downstairs, and his mother accordingly fixed a bed there for him. The balance of the family then retired for the night. About 1 o'clock Saturday morning the loud report of a gun resounded through the house and an investigation revealed the fact that William had shot himself. He died instantly. The man had evidently carefully planned the act. He went up stairs during the night, and while his mother and brother were sleeping, proceeded to the latter's room, where he secured a revolver, and with this weapon killed himself. He stood beside the bed when he committed the act, and his body fell across that of his brother. He father, Peter Beck, died at Ehrenfeld several years ago. Besides his mother, four brothers survive him. |
