| WERTZ, Susan (Berkey) w/o JOHN A. WERTZ d/o SQUIRE PETER BERKEY Johnstown Tribune, Monday, November 9, 1903. Susan, widow of John Wertz, died at the Wertz homestead in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, at 8 o'clock this morning from the effects of a paralytic stroke, sustained January 20, 1901, aged nearly ninety-two years. Mrs. Wertz was a daughter of the late Squire Peter Berkey, who at one time resided at Kring's Station and who has been dead for many years. She was born in Somerset County December 15, 1811, and lived all her life in that section of the Commonwealth, being married more than three-quarters of a century ago to John Wertz, who preceded her to the grave many years since. To the union thirteen children were born, of whom the following ten survive their venerable mother, the eldest being seventy-six years of age: Caroline, widow of Jacob Gordon, near New Paris, Bedford County; Hettie, wife of William Shunk, of Etna Green, Ind.; Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Roddy, of Upper Yoder Township, Cambria County; David B. Wertz, residing on the old homestead on which his mother died; Susan, widow of Stephen McCreary, near Helixville, Bedford County; Catherine, wife of Jacob Holsopple, near Geistown; Jacob Wertz, unmarried and residing at home; Peter Wertz, of Logansport, Ind.; Lucinda, wife of Ephraim Seese, of Virginia; Mary, wife of Albert Kinzey, near New Paris. The deceased is also survived by one brother and one sister-- Joseph Berkey, of Shade Township, Somerset County, and Catherine, wife of William Seese, of New Cambria, Kan. Mrs. Wertz was in good health prior to the stroke of three years ago, but since then had been confined to her bed. Last Friday she became worse and is supposed to have sustained another stroke, sinking until the end came this morning. She was a member of the German Baptist Brethren Church for many years. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, with interment in the family burying ground on the Wertz homestead. |
