| Johnstown Tribune, Johnstown PA; March 12, 1909 George W. Rose Member of well known Johnstown family passed away at Washington, Pa. George W. Rose, who was a member of a well know Johnstown family spent his boyhood here, died yesterday at his home in Washington, Pa. in his 70 year. He was in ill health for several years and his death had been expected. The deceased was born in Johnstown at the corner of Vine and Market streets on Nov. 28,1840, his parents, Allen and Elizabeth Rose, being among the earliest settlers of Johnstown. He was the youngest member of the Allen Rose family. He learned the trade of machinist in the P.R.R. shops at Altoona and for a number of years operated a plant at Pleasantville and Bradford subsequently removed to Washington. The deceased was a highly skilled mechanic and was noted for his ability in the manufacture of fishing tools to secure lost tools in oil wells, and perhaps as an extensive acquaintance with oil producers as any person in the country. For a time he was associated with the late Napoleon Haynes in the manufacture of cucumber wood pumps in Johnstown, He was foreman of machine shop of the Johnstown Mechanical Works before going to Bradford to operate his plant. Mr. Rose leaves to survive him a widow Dorcas Rose, who resides at Washington, and a son , Harvey J. residing at Bradford. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Cohick, residing in Johnstown and Agnes F. Thomas, residing in Armstrong County, a brother, The Hon. Horace Rose of this city. These represent his immediate family, while there are also a number of nephews and nieces, who are the children of Wesley J. Rose and W. Horace Rose and sisters. The body of George W. will arrive in Johnstown tomorrow evening and the funeral will take place from the residence of his nephew Walter E. No 226 Levergood street at 2 o'clock p.m. on Sunday. Interment Grandview Cemetery. |
