HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY 1215

    Joseph McGonicle, justice of the peace, is among the highly respected and well known young men of Lilly, where he was born Feb. 11, 1892. He is the son of Charles A. and Mary M. (Bambrick) McGonigle.
    The McGonigle family emigrated to this country from Ireland at an early date and settled in Cambria County, where Charles A., the father of the subject of this sketch, was born June 5, 1853. He was the son of Jeremiah McGonigle, a prominent pioneer of Lilly. Charles A. McGonigle was a merchant, dealing in lumber and coal. He died Dec. 17, 1917, and is buried in St. Bridgett's Cemetery, Lilly. His widow was born near Gallitzin, Pa., and resides with her son, Joseph. Mr. McGonigle served as burgess of Lilly, justice of the peace and as township assessor. To Mr. and Mrs. McGonigle the following children were born: Jeremiah P., born April 4, 1874, lives at home; Winifred, born July 4, 1876, married James C. Rainey, lives at Lilly; William A., born Sept. 24, 1878, married Irene Livengood, lives at Pitcairn, Pa.; Francis, born Nov. 19, 1880, lives at Cresson, Pa., married Hilda Brawley; Anna B., born April 12, 1886, lives at Altoona, Pa.; Austin, born July 31, 1883, died March 21, 1895; Genevieve, born 1889, died Feb. 1, 1891; Joseph, the subject of this sketch; Margaret M., born Aug. 25, 1895, died Sept. 14, 1895; and Charles Cyril, born May 23, 1898, studying for the priesthood at St. Francis Seminary.
    Joseph McGonigle grew up at Lilly and attended parochial schools. He succeeded his father as justice of the peace in 1918 and also served as burgess of Lilly from January, 1921, until January, 1926. He has been assessor since 1919.
    Mr. McGonigle is a Democrat and a member of the Catholic Church. He is unmarried.




    F. H. Beers is an enterprising merchant of Ashville and a substantial citizen of Cambria County. He was born near Fallentimber, Cambria County, Sept. 28, 1884, and is a son of Samuel H. and Sarah (Troxel) Beeres.
    Samuel H. Beers was born near Fallentimber, April 5, 1854, and died Dec. 30, 1918. He engaged in general farming in early life and later conducted a general mercantile business at Fallentimber. He served as tax collector and as constable of White Township for 14 years. He was a member of the United Brethren Church. His wife, who was born at Glasgow, Pa., Sept. 15, 1863, resides with her son at Ashville. Mr. and Mrs.
