1190 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    Leo A. Kirsch. Ranking among the leading and well known citizens of Cambria County is Leo A. Kirsch, burgess of Spangler. He was born in Barr Township, Cambria County, Sept. 4, 1883, and is the son of Michael J. and Mary (Soisson) Kirsch.
    Michael J. Kirsch, deceased, was a native of Cambria County, and spent his entire life here. He died in November, 1924, and is buried at Nicktown. His widow resides at Spangler. Mr. Kirsch was a carpenter by trade and was employed by the railroad companies in the building of trestles and by the mines in the building of tipples. He was a Democrat and served as school director, county auditor, tax collector, and held various other public offices. He was a member of the Catholic Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Kirsch the following children were born: Michael, Mary and Margaret, all deceased; Clema, anurse, lives at Lancaster, Pa.; Linus, lives at Spangler; Leo A., the subject of this sketch; F.D., lives at Nanty Glo; M. Zeno, lives at Spangler; M. Ivo, a World war veteran, having served in the Aviation Corps at Kelly Field, is a professor at Pittsburgh Academy; Hildegard, in religious life is known as Sister Mary Martha; Helen, at home; and Agnes Eulalia, married James Benson, lives in Philadelphia.
    Leo A. Kirsch attended the public schools at Barr Township and Spangler and when a young man learned the plumber trade at Cincinnati, Ohio. He became a licensed plumber March 27, 1906, in Pittsburgh, and was employed by various companies in thast city and Altoona. In 1908 he returned to Spangler and established the Kirsch Plumbing and Heating Company, which has developed into one of the leading businesses of its kind in the county. Mr. Kirsch is also a sanitary engineer. In 1910 he became a member of the Master Plumbers' Association.
    Mr. Kirsch was elected burgess of Spangler in November, 1917, and re-elected in 1921 and again in 1915. He has also served as auditor of the city.
    In 1912 Mr. Kirsch was united in marriage with Miss Rose Marie Benson, the daughter of William and Martha (Hogan) Benson, natives of the British Isles. Mr. Benson is deceased and his widow lives at Nanty Glo. Mr. and Mrs. Kirsch have had a son, Leo A., Jr., born in 1914, died in infancy.
    Mr. Kirsch is a Democrat, a member of the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Elks Lodge. He is a popular and trustworthy official and is well liked.
