HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY 1179

Associated with Barker Brothers Coal Company. In 1912 Mr. Conrad opened the first motion picture theatre in Nanty Glo, which he conducted for a short time. Later he remodeled a skating rink which he had conducted, into a theatre, which had a seating capacity of 700. This is known as the Star Theatre and was operated by Mr. Conrad until 1923, when he disposed of it. He organized the Jackson Light, Heat & Power Company, which furnished electricity to the homes of business places of Nanty Glo. This company later became a part of the Pennsylvania Central Company. In 1923 Mr. Conrad was elected water commissioner and reelected in 1926.
    In 1877 Mr. Conrad was married to Miss Margaret Ball, a daughter of Patrick and Rachael (Stiner) Ball, natives of Adams County, Pa. During the Civil War Mr. Ball served and was taken prisoner and sent to Andersonville prison. He was never heard of afterwards. There were four children born to Mr. and Mrs. Ball: John, lives at Morrisdale, Pa.; George, deceased; Mary, the widow of Samuel Haywood, lives at Hawk Run, Pa.; and Margaret Conrad. To Mr. and Mrs. Conrad ten children were born, as follows: (1) Harold, lives in Florida; (2) John, married Rhoda Griffith, lives at Ebensburg, and they have two children, Wilfred and Gladys; (3) Mamie, married R. B. Madill, lives at Nanty Glo, and they have six children, Odessa, Maxine, Robert, Charles, Wallace and Winifred; (4) Ada, married Joseph Griffith, lives at Altoona, Pa., where he is superintendent of the Pennsylvania Central Coal Mine, and they have a daughter, Helen; (5) Esther, married Roy Warfield, lives at Newark, N. J., where he is assistant superintendent of the New Jersey Public Service company, and have two daughters, Mabel and Margaret; (6) George, married Margaret Evans, lives at St. Benedict's, Pa., where he is chief electrician for the Peel Coal Company, and they have four children, Chester, George, Margaret and Gwendolyn; (7) Samuel, lives at home; (8) Charles, married Hannah Lewis, lives at St. Benedict, Pa., where he is associated with the Peel Coal Company, and they have a daughter, Ruth. He is a World War veteran, having served in France with the 305th Engineers; (9) Hulda, lives at home; and (10) Edna, a teacher, lives at home.
    Mr. Conrad is a Republican and has served as a member of the city council and as health officer. He is a member of the Methodist Church, F. & A. M. No. 312, Ebensburg, Williamsport Consistory, Jaffa Temple and Shrine Club, Altoona. The Conrad family is well known in the community and highly esteemed.
