Pa. He later managed the W. B. Alexander Hotel, later known as the Brunswick Hotel, at Titusville, and in 1911 removed to Nanty Glo, where he became identified with the Lincoln Coal Company as assistant foreman. He was then assistant mine foreman for the Pennsylvania Coal & Coke Corporation and spent some time at Altoona as foreman of Been Creek Mine No. 1. Since 1919 Mr. Allen has held his present position as mine foreman for the Springfield Coal Mining Company at Nanty Glo. During the year of 1919 he made a visit to Scotland. J. J. Conrad, water commissioner of Nanty Glo, is a prominent citizen of Cambria County. He was born in Schuylkill, Pa., Dec. 14, 1858, and is the son of Edward and Susan (Daubert) Conrad. Edward Conrad, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in Schuylkill County, Pa., and during his active career worked in the mines of Pennsylvania. When the Civil War broke out he was one of the first to enlist in the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and served two enlistments. He died in 1869. His wife, also a native of Schuylkill County, is deceased. Mr. Conrad was a Republican, a member of the Lutheran Church and Grand Army of the Republic. There were five children in the Conrad family; George W., lives retired at Munson, Pa.; Edward, deceased; J. J., the subject of this sketch; Mary, married George Cowan, lives at Portage, Pa.; and Catherine, the widow of Benjamin Miller, lives at Pottsville, Pa. J. J. Conrad attended the district schools of Schuylkill County. He began work in the mines as a slate picker and later worked as a mule driver. He was promoted to engineer in which capacity he served for 20 years. In 1901 Mr. Conrad moved to Nanty Glo, where he was connected with the Dunwoodie Coal Mine as an engineer.
