1170 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    Mr. McHugh is a Democrat and a member of St. Charles Catholic Church. He has an extensive acquaintance in the community and is favorably known.




    George M. Myers is among the highly esteemed and well known citizens of Nanty Glo. He was born at Philipsburg, Pa., Jan. 12, 1877, and is a son of John S. and Rachel (Williams) Myers.
    John S. Myers, deceased, was a native of Buff Le Run, Pa., and the son of Michael and Leah (Stine) Myers, natives of Center County, Pa. The Myers are of German descent, the name originally being spelled Meyers. John, Jacob and Michael Myers emigrated to this country many years ago and settled in Center County, Pa., where they became prominent farmers. John S. Myers began life as a farmer but was later interested in the lumber business. He died in March, 1923, and is buried at Philipsburg. His wife, a native of Indiana County, Pa., died Dec. 7, 1915. She was the daughter of John F. and Mary (Rickets) Williams, natives of Punxsutawney, Pa. To John S. and Rachel (Williams) Myers 12 children were born, as follows: Emma, the widow of William Whitton, who died in October, 1923, and she resides at Philipsburg; Sally, deceased; Alice, the widow of Paul McGuire, who died in February, 1923; Thaddeus, deceased; John M.; William, and Irvin, who live at Philipsburg; Ella, married Edward Irvin, lives at Clarksburg, Va.; George M., the subject of this sketch; Charles, died Jan. 2, 1913; Leah, married George Miller, lives at Philipsburg; and Eva, married John Jones, lives at Youngstown, Ohio.
    George M. Myers spent his boyhood at Philipsburg and entered the mines, after completing his schooling. He was connected with the Pardee Coal Company of Clearfield County until 1905, when he removed to Nanty Glo and became associated with Barker Bros. Coal Company. This company was later owned by the Estep Coal Company and Mr. Myers remained in their employ until 1912, when he went with the Springfield Coal Company as assistant foreman. Three years later he went with the Lincoln Coal Company and was later connected with the Heisley Coal Company as assistant foreman. He then returned to the employ of the Springfield Coal Company, and in 1920 became mine foreman for the Warren Coal Company of Nanty Glo. He has been connected with the Webster Coal Company since 1922, and on Oct. 1, 1923, was appointed general foremen.
