born in 1888, married Frank M. Craig, a former member of the St. Louis American baseball team, lives in Johnstown, where he is connected with the Lorain Steel Company; Leo M., of Johnstown, a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history; Francis Henry, the subject of this sketch; and Marguerite F., born in 1896, married Joseph C. Kelly, lives at Ferndale, Pa., where he is treasurer of the Cambria Theatre Company.
Frank Henry Conrad received his education in the parochial schools of Johnstown and Johnstown High School. He completed a business course in 1912, after which he entered the employ of the Lorain Steel Company. After nine months he was transferred from the employment to the purchasing department. On April 2, 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Camp Lee, Va., in the personnel section of the Three Hundred Seventeenth Infantry. He went to France in May, 1918, on the transport Mongolia, and landed at Brest, France. He participated in the Argonne, Saint Mihiel and Somme-Aisne offensives. He was discharged at Camp Lee, Va., June 13, 1919, and returned to Johnstown, and the employ of the Lorain Steel Company. The following February he enrolled at Carnegie Institute of Technology, from which he received his degree in 1921. He was then identified with the Edward A. Woods Company at Pittsburgh, general agents for the Equitable Life Insurance Company of new York. He was later transferred to Johnstown as a special agent for the company and has offices in the First National Bank Building.
On June 16, 1025, Mr. Conrad was united in marriage with Miss Viola G. Custer, the daughter of Charles F. and Ida May (Briney) Custer, residents of East Liberty, Pa. Mr. Custer was born in Somerset County, Pa., and for a number of years was connected with the Penn Traffic Company, Johnstown. He afterwards served as advertising manager for Gimbel Brothers, Philadelphia, and later removed to East Liberty, where he is manager of the advertising sign department of the May Drug company. His wife is a native of Johnstown.
Mr. Conrad is a member of St. John's Catholic Church and his wife belongs to the Franklin Methodist Episcopal Church. He is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, fourth degree; American Legion; Veterans' Association of the Eightieth Division, Pittsburgh; Moon Club of Pittsburgh, Calument Club, Eastern Century Club of New York, Johnstown Association of Life Underwriters, and Johnstown Chamber of Commerce. He is a Republican.
