THE JOHNSTOWN TRIBUNE JOHNSTOWN, PA 1938 Friday Evening, 18 Mar 1938 p. 11, c. 3 Contributed by Gordon Grening WALNUT GROVE MAN, 86, DIES SUDDENLY OF CARDIAC ATTACK William Rodda Was Native of England; Kept Store at Walsall William Rodda, 86, died suddenly at his home, 1071 Bedford Street, Walnut Grove, at 8:30 o’clock this morning. Deputy Coroner John A. Conway said death was due to a cardiac heart attack. Born in England, Mr. Rodda came to this country many years ago and located in Bedford County, where he was employed in the operation of the ore mines at Riddlesburg. Almost 40 years ago he came to this vicinity and for 35 years operated a general store at Walsall retiring in 1934. Since then he had lived in Walnut Grove. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth (Purdue) Rodda, died seven years ago. Surviving are a son, Fred Rodda of 1071 Bedford Street, and a daughter, Mrs. Bessie Wingard of Hartley, Del. Mr. Rodda was a member of the Hopewell Lodge of Odd Fellows and of the Knights of the Golden Eagle at Riddlesburg. Funeral services are to be conducted by Rev. Alex Weaver and Rev. J. A. Robinson, but the time has not been set, awaiting the arrival of his daughter. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery, directed by Fred Geisel, Dale mortician.   Saturday Evening, 19 Mar 1938 p. 9, c. 5 Contributed by Gordon Grening WILLIAM RODDA RITES MONDAY AFTERNOON Funeral services for William Rodda, 86, who died of a heart attack at his home, 1071 Bedford Street, at 8:30 o’clock yesterday morning, fatally stricken while listening to a radio broadcast, will be held at 10 o’clock Monday morning at his home. Rev. J. A. Robinson, pastor of the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, and Rev. Alex Weaver of the Geistown Mennonite Church will conduct the obsequies. Interment will be in Richland Cemetery, directed by Fred J. Geisel, Bedford Street mortician. Mr. Rodda, native of England, had resided in this vicinity for almost 40 years, coming here from Bedford County.   11 Nov 1938 Contributed by Lynne Canterbury WEDDINGS CONNELL-ECKENRODE Cresson -- Miss Ruth Eckenrode of Cresson and Ralph Connell Jr. of Lilly were married Tuesday morning in St. Aloysius Catholic Church at the Summit. Rev. Father John O'Donnell, chaplain of the Cresson Sanatorium officiated. The bride is a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College and was an instructor in the Cresson Sanatorium School. Mr. Connell is a chemist for the State Department of Highways. He is a graduate of Fordham University. Mr. and Mrs. Connell will make their home in Harrisburg.   2 Dec 1938 p. 27 Contributed by Lynne Canterbury HAS TONSILS REMOVED Miss Harriet Bruckner, 208 Mango Avenue, Coopersdale, is a patient at Windber Hospital, where she underwent an operation for removal of tonsils yesterday. She is expected to eturn to her home tomorrow. $40,000 AMOUNT OF YULE CHECKS, SOMERSET COUNTY Somerset -- Christmas savings fund checks are being distributed today to a number of homes in the local district. More than 1,000 persons will receive approximately $40,000 in Christmas checks. A check of eight banks in the county yesterday revealed that $38,400 has been distributed to 925 depositors during the past few days. The eight banks distributing the checks are located in Somerset, Meyersdale, Jennerstown and Rockwood. Similar accounts in other county banks will raise the total considerably above the $40,000 mark. In Somerset along, the County Trust Company, the First National, People's National and the Somerset Trust Company released a combined total of $19,600 for 500 depositors. According to statistics prepared by the Christmas Savings Clubs Corporation, approximately 32 percent of the $40,000 will be used for Christmas purchases in the county.
