HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY 1219

County Sept. 26, 1864, and began the practice of law in 1869 and continued this until his removal to East Conemaugh, with the exception of a few years from 1881 to 1885 spent in Johnstown.
    He served as district attorney from 1871 to 1875 and was elected for a second term in 1880 without opposition. He was past grand of Highland Lodge I. O. O. F. and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
    He was married Jan. 25, 1865, to Margaret Lloyd, who was born in 1842 and died Sept. 2, 1894. She was a daughter of Rees S. Lloyd, of Cambria County. Their children were: Anna Eliza, married Forest Green of Altoona, died at Tampa, Fla., May, 1906; John L., formerly editor of the South Fork Courier, now proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel at Ebensburg, married Frances Miller; Alice; Mariam, married Joseph Simpson; and Charles H




    Thomas Murphy is well known in Cambria County as the capable postmaster of Ashville. He was born here Aug. 26, 1889, and is the son of Joseph and Margaret (Byrne) Murphy.
    Joseph Murphy, deceased, was a native of Cambria County. He was born near Creson, in May, 1853, and in early life worked in the mines. He died in 1901 and is buried in Ashville. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy were the parents of the following children: Margaret, born May 21, 1879, married L. J. Brannigan, lives at Ashville; John, born 1881, died 1918; Leo, born in 1882, died in 1886; Marie, born May 22, 1883, married C. P. Rhody, lives in Pittsburgh; Elizabeth, born July 7, 1885, lives at home; Ella, born in 1887, died in 1889; Thomas, the subject of this sketch; and Joseph, who was killed during the battle of Chateau Thierry, while serving in France during the World War.
    Thomas Murphy was reared and educated at Ashville and after completing his schooling entered the employ of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company at Akron, Ohio. In 1821 he resigned his position on account of ill health and returned to Ashville, where he engaged in the general merchandise business. He has served as postmaster since 1922.
    In November 1924, Mr. Murphy was united in marriage with Miss Mary M. Dougherty, the daughter of Augustine and Anna (Douglass) Dougherty. Mr. Dougherty was born in 1858 and died in 1913. His wife
