    F. W. Eicher, proprietor of the Eicher Printing Company, who has for many years been identified with Cambria County as editor of the Portage Dispatch, is one of the widely known newspaper men of the state. He was born in Queen township, Bedford County, Pa., Aug. 3, 1877, a son of James and Elizabeth (Long) Eicher.
James Eicher was born in Bedford County, Pa., March 18, 1854. His father, Samuel Eicher, was born in Brush Valley, Indiana County, Pa., and came to Bedford County when a young man and settled on land which was mostly timber. He made extensive improvements on his land and became one of the most successful farmers of Queenstown Township. He married Nancy Riddle and they were the parents of 11 children, as follows: William, Jackson, Mary, Alexander, Lizzie, George, Alice, David, Frederick, one child who died in infancy, and James. He was a Democrat and a member of the Lutheran Church.
James Eicher grew to manhood on his father's farm, moving to Portage in 1880, and then worked as a miner for 12 years, after which he purchased a farm in Blair County, where he resided until his death, which occurred in 1900. He was a member of the United Brethren Church and unlike his father, voted the Republican ticket. He also served for several years as school director. He married Elizabeth Long, who was born in Blair County, Pa., March 1855. She is now living retired in Portage. To this union five children were born: F. W., the subject of this sketch; Lucy, born April 10, 1880, married Albert Gaunter; Edgar, born in 1882; Crawford, born in 1884; and James H., born in 1889.
