1176 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

August of that year accepted a position with the West Virginia Pulp and paper Company at Tyrone, Pa., as cost accountant. On April 24, 1918, he volunteered for service in the World War and was sent to Fort Thomas, Ky., where he was assigned to Company Headquarters, 52nd Infantry, 6th Division. He saw active service in France during the Marne and Meuse-Argonne engagements, and was gassed. He was discharged as a first sergeant at Camp Dix, N. J., July 27, 1919. Mr. Meckley returned to his former position at Tyrone andin1921 went to Vintondale, where he was connected with the Vinton Colliers as paymaster and cost clerk. He became identified with the Cupp Grocery Company of Johnstown as store manager in 1924 and in December, 1925, was appointed manager of their store at Expedit.
    In 1917 Mr. Meckley was married to Miss Priscilla Daly, the daughter of John William and Jane Ann (Roe) Daly, natives of Tioga County, Pa., and residents of Vintondale. Mr. and Mrs. Meckley have a daughter, Jane Ann, born in September, 1921.
    Mr. Meckley is a Republican, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown and Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Ebensburg. His father was affiliated with the F. A. M. No. 312, Ebensburg, Williamsport Consistory, 32nd degree, Jaffa Temple and Shrine Club of Altoona, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Ebensburg.




    Glen J. Harkins is a well known and substantial citizen of Nanty Glo, where he is identified with the Cambria Supply Company. He was born at Long Valley, Bradford County, Pa., Dec. 14, 1890, and is the son of John H. and Agnes (Tears) Harkins.
    John H. Harkins, deceased, was a native of Kennebunk, Me., and his wife was born in Nova Scotia. He engaged in farming and died in 1891. His widow resides at Albany, N. Y. They had three children: Parnell, married Arthur Naylor, lives at Nanty Glo; Florence, married James Hadley, lives at Emeigh, Pa.; and Glen J., the subject of this sketch.
    Glen J. Harkins attended the public schools of Bradford County, Mansfield Normal School and Lock Haven Normal School. For a number of years he was interested in professional baseball and was a member of Little Rock, Ark., team, East Liverpool, Ohio, and Johnstown teams. He lived at Heilwood, Pa., for several years and later worked in the mines at
