1174 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

Daughter of John Frazier of Bedford County, Pa., and they had eight children, as follows: Susan, the widow of George W. Reed, lives in Chicago; William H., deceased; Emma, deceased; Simon, father of the subject of this sketch; Thomas, deceased; Nancy, the widow of J. H. Carter, lives in Nebraska; George B., lives at Newark, Ohio; and John Harry, lives in Chicago.
    Simon Adams received his early education in the schools of Blacklick Township, Cambria County, and during his boyhood worked in his father's mill. He later engaged in general farming and owned 150 acres of land.. he was also interested in the lumber business. He enlisted June 14, 1863, in Company E., Battalion of Emergency, and received his discharge Aug. 8, 1863. On Sept, 19, 1864, he reenlisted for a period of three years and was attached to the Army of the Potomac. He participated in the battles of Hachers Run, Gravel Run, five Forks, High Bridge, and Appomattox Court House, and was present at Lee's surrender. He was a Republican and held many offices of trust and honor in his township. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Grand Army of the Republic and Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Ebensburg. On March, 13, 1868, Mr. Adams was married to Miss Maggie Nipps, who was born Aug. 24, 1845, the daughter of John and Catherine (Reed) Nipps. Mrs. Adams lives at Belsano. To Simon and Maggie (Nipps) Adams three sons were born: Orr, died Sept. 5, 1893; Bert, the subject of this sketch; and William, born May 1, 1884, lives in Pittsburgh, married Edith Graham, and they have a daughter, Margaret.
    Bert Adams attended the schools of Blacklick Township and remained on the home farm until he was 21 years of age. He was then employed by the Pittsburgh Railroad Company at Pittsburgh for several years, after which he returned to Belsano and entered the employ of the McFadden Coal Company. He later served as assistant foreman of the Commercial Coal Company, and in 1921 engaged in the general mercantile business at Belsano. For several years Mr. Adams was identified with the Blacklick Colliers Company as foreman. He was appointed postmaster of Belsano and served in that capacity from Oct. 18, 1920, until Jan. 1, 1926. He also served as road supervisor, township auditor and assessor.
    In 1897 Mr. Adams was married to Miss Emma B. Carney, who was born in Indiana County, Pa., Sept. 25, 1878, the daughter of Emerson R. and Nancy (Strong) Carney, residents of Indiana County. Mr. and Mrs.
