Pendry, where he served for three years. In 1906 he entered the employ of the Johnstown fire department as a hose man, and a short time later was appointed lieutenant of Fire Department No. 1. In 1908 he was advanced to captain and in 1916 was acting fire chief. In 1921 he was appointed first assistant chief of the Johnstown Fire Department, a position which he still holds. In July, 1909, Mr. Roof was seriously injured during the Old Forge plant fire at Woodvale, and was out of the department for six months. In 1912 he was injured again and was forced to retire from the department for 15 days. This was the Flue fire on Conemaugh Street. Dr. Francis T. Carney, a prominent young physician and surgeon of Johnstown, was born in this city, Sept. 21, 1898, and is a son of Frank T. and Mary (McNeelis) Carney. Frank T. Carney, deceased, was well known in Johnstown for many years as superintendent of the police and fire departments of the Cambria Steel Company. He was born in Johnstown, Dec. 7, 1856, the son of John P. and Ellen (Keley) Carney. John P. Carney, second son of John and Bridgest (Devaney) Carney, was born in County Mayo, Ireland, Jan. 6, 1817.
