and Florence, twin sister of Anna, married Earl B. Sease, lives at Portage.
    Edwin T. Short attended the public schools of Portage and St. Francis College, Loretta, [sic] Pa. He has been connected with the Miners & Merchants Deposit Bank since 1913. On July 13, 1918, Mr. Short married Miss Maud M. Hewitt. They have two daughters; Elisabeth E., born Nov. 7, 1920; and Lois, born Sept. 22, 1922.
    Mr. Short is a Republican, a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Elks Lodge No. 175, Johnstown; Knights of Columbus, Portage; Knights of St. George and Loyal Order of Moose.
    During the World War Mr. Short enlisted in Company A, 347th Infantry, and was sent to Camp Oglethorpe, Ca., where he was commissioned a second lieutenant. He was later transferred to Camp Pike, Ark., and from there to Camp Perry, Ohio, and Camp Cody, N. M.
    Mrs. James G. Hewitt is well and favorably known throughout Cambria County and has served as truant officer of Portage for a number of years. She holds membership in the Lutheran Church and Twentieth Century Club.




    John C. Bowser, general merchant of Portage, is a substantial and highly respected citizen of Cambria County. He was born in Greenfield Township, Blair County, Pa., Nov. 22, 1865, and is the son of Moses and Mary (Richey) Bowser.
    Moses Bowser, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in Blair County and was a farmer during his entire life. He died in 1895. Mr. Bowser served during the Civil War as a member of Company F, 49th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was severely wounded in action, from which he never fully recovered. He was the son of Jacob Bowser, a prominent pioneer citizen of Bedford County. To Mr. And Mrs. Moses Bowser the following children were born: Emenual, Christina, Catherine, Elizabeth, Lucinda, Mary, and Edward, all deceased; Anna, married John Adams, lives at Roaring Springs, Pa.; Ellen, married John Conrad, lives retired in Blair County, Pa.; John C., the subject of this sketch; and Ida, married George Berkheimer, lives at Portage.
    John C. Bowser spent his boyhood on his father's farm and received his education in the district school. After his marriage in 1899 he engaged in the trucking business and was also the owner of two well improved
