On Jan. 1, 1905, he was appointed assistant postmaster under Levi J. Foust. He served three terms as clerk of the common council. On April 13, 1922, he was appointed postmaster. John L. Cover is assistant postmaster. The present postoffice building was completed in 1914 at a cost of $120,000. There are 150 people employed at this office. Frank J. Lauer is among Nanty Glo's reliable and excellent business men, where he is proprietor of the Lauer Motor Company. He was born at Phillipsburg, Pa., April 11, 1885, and is a son of Peter and Mary A. (Hebe) Lauer. Peter Lauer was born in Saarbroeken, Germany, June 15, 1858, and died Sept. 29, 1911. He is buried at Stoyestown, Pa. In 1868 Mr. Lauer came to this country from Germany and settled at Morris Run, Pa., where he was employed in the mines. He later lived at Phillipsburg. He was a Democrat and a member of the Lutheran Church. His widow was born in Tioga County, Pa., and resides at Nanty Glo. To Mr. and Mrs. Lauer 12 children were born, as follows: (1) William, employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad, live at Altoona; (2) George, salesman, lives at Johnstown, Pa.; (3) Edward, general merchant, lives at Hooversville, Pa.; (4) Frank J., the subject of this sketch; (5) Effie, deceased; (6) Mary, married G. V. Ankeny, lives at Johnstown, where he is connected with the Bethlehem Steel Company; (7) Lucilla, deceased; (8) Mariam, deceased; (9) Henry |
