824 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

Nicholson is a member of the Eastern Star at Patton, PA. The Nicholson family has been known in Cambria County for years and has always been a highly respected family, one that has been an asset to the community.




    Charles A. Sharbaugh, who has successfully engaged in business at Carrolltown since 1887, ranks among the prominent pioneer business men and highly esteemed citizens of Cambria County. He was born in Carroll Township, Cambria County, Aug 16, 1860, and is the son of Jacob and Mary (Noel) Sharbaugh.
    Jacob Sharbaugh was a native of Germany, as was his wife. They emigrated to America early in life and settled in Cambria County, where Mr. Sharbaugh followed his trade as a blacksmith and also farmed. He died in 1875 and his wife died in 1881. Mr. and Mrs. Sharbaugh were the parents of the following children: Susan, John W., Mary, James, Minnie, and Ella, all deceased; Catherine, married William Sweren, lives at Carrolltown; Rose, married John McDermott, lives at Johnstown; and C. A., the subject of this sketch.
    C. A. Sharbaugh grew up on his father's farm and received his education in the district schools. He began his business career as a clerk and in 1887 engaged in business for himself at Carrolltown. He has been successful in his undertaking and during his many years in business has established an excellent trade. In 1901 Mr. Sharbaugh was one of the organizers of the First National Bank of Carrolltown, of which he is a director. In 1918 he was elected president of the institution. In 1920 he helped organize the Citizens Bank of Barnesboro, of which he is president.
    On Nov. 22, 1881, Mr. Sharbaugh was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Hang, of Carrolltown, the daughter of Andrew and Catherine (Blum) Hang, natives of Germany. They have six children, as follows: Bertha, married Dr. G.R. Anderson, who lives at Barnesboro, Pa.; Robert H., a merchant at Carrolltown; Cornelius A., a merchant at Carrolltown; Alma, married D.J. Murphy, lives at Barnesboro; W. Earl, garage owner, Carrolltown; and Helen, married B.J. Dillon, lives at Carrolltown.
    Mr. Sharbaugh is a Democrat and served as a member of the borough council for 20 years and as school director for 21 years. He holds membership in the Catholic Church, and is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, Elk, Eagles, Kiwanis Club, and the Chetrimon Country Golf Club.
