744 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    Herbert Schrader is well and favorably known in Johnstown and Geistown, where he is identified with the business of William Schrader, leading florists of this section. He was born in Johnstown, July 2, 1896, and is the son of William and Lena (Thom) Schrader.
    William Schrader, deceased, was a native of Germany. At the age of 16 years he came to this country and settled in Johnstown, where he engaged in the florist business in June, 1904. At the time of his death in 1923 he ranked among the reliable and successful business men of Johnstown. His wife, who was born in Johnstown, is also deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Schrader the following children were born: William J., who died in France, while in service during the World war; Agnes, identified with the Schrader floral business; Herbert, the subject of this sketch; Clara, Anna, Gertrude, Walter, and Helen, all at home.
    Herbert Schrader received his education in the public schools of Westmont and Walnut Grove. At an early age he became interested in his father's business, of which he is now manager. This retail floral business, which is owned by the Schrader estate, is located at 510 Vine Street, Johnstown, with greenhouses at Geistown. It has developed into one of the leading businesses of its kind in the state, specializing in the growing of flowers and vegetable plants. There is one section under glass which is 170 by 30 feet, and five sections which are 100 by 22 feet.
    Mr. Schrader is a Republican and a member of the Lutheran Church. He is one of the enterprising young business men of the community.

    R. A. Betz, garage owner of Summerhill, is among the leading and dependable young business men of Cambria County. He was born at this place, Sept. 9, 1897, and is the son of George and Minnie (Long) Betz.
    George Betz came to this country from Germany with his parents when he was six years of age. They settled at Summerhill, where Mr. Betz was employed by a lumber dealer and contractor. He died in 1915. His widow, who resides at Summerhill, is a native of this place and the daughter of Peter Long, early settler of Cambria County. To Mr. and Mrs. Betz seven children were born, as follows: Clestine, married Elva White, lives at Summerhill, Pa.; Frances, married Charles Hittle, lives at Summerhill; Marie and Clara, both at home; Coletta, married Adolph West, lives at Summerhill; and R. A., the subject of this sketch.
